Fresh from Nick’s Cove On Tomales Bay. If you go, don’t miss the deviled duck eggs topped with duck confit. Outstanding.

We just ran across this slide show on our San Francisco studio that ran in ReadyMade magazine. We may have grown a bit since then, but yes, I do still have over my desk the Red Ryder BB gun I won in 3rd grade and wiener dog supervisors ~ keeps things ship shape around here! - ff
Nomad Editions, the company that has ‘beautiful, engaging weekly magazines delivered digitally to your iPad” recently featured our dessert and wine pairing images on their cover and inside feature of Uncorked Magazine. The panna cotta with peaches is a favorite around Frankeny Images.
When I met Robbie Lewis some 18 years ago, we were both working in the kitchen at Rubicon during Traci Des Jardins’ pre-Jardiniere days. I was expediting in hopes of learning about California cuisine so I could transition from fashion photography to food. Robbie, who would later go on to helm Jardiniere, Bacar and the stoves at Oracle, was on the other side of the line shoving hot plates my direction, flanked by the likes of Paul Arenstam (Americano, Summer Kitchen + Bake Shop), Richard Reddington (Redd) and of course Traci. To know @Rdlewisjr is to love reading his acerbic and rascally tweets, but to know him well is to see that he is also quite an insightful person and writer. His “Thank You Card” to el Bulli’s Chef Ferran Adrià, published today on SFgate, is a perfect example of his thoughtfulness and passion for his industry.
We are currently shooting two new books from Chef Michael Chiarello and Chef Elizabeth Falkner, both are competing against each other in this Fall’s Next Iron Chef. Oh the suspense! Ten of the world’s most celebrated super chefs go to battle to become a member of the elite Iron Chef culinary society in a new eight-episode season of The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs, premiering Sunday, October 30th at 9pm ET/PT. Hosted by Alton Brown and shot in Los Angeles and New York, the fourth season of the series amps up the competition to meet the elevated skills of these supreme experts - challenging their kitchen chops, mental toughness and masterful instincts.
Fall is here ~ but what a fun summer it was! And the hit of the summer from Frankeny Images was definitely the cookbook we shot for Miette~ San Francisco’s charming pastry shop located in the Ferry Building (Hayes Valley and in Jack London Square as well). The book has the nostalgia for the dreamy childhood most of us didn’t have but surely wanted. For more delicious look inside click here.
Updated! The book hit Amazon’s #1 spot ~Best Sellers in Books:The best items in Books based on Amazon customer purchases!
We recently had a second opportunity to work with these very talented young chefs-in- training while shooting another book for chef-in-his-prime Michael Chiarello. They are the real deal these gals ~ I hope they remember me when they make it big~ Sneak Peek into Michael’s new book coming soon!
I last had the pleasure of shooting Chef Michael Dotson’s food when he and partner Moira Beveridge opened Sens over-looking the Ferry Building. Now they have an awesome gastro-pub, Martins West in Redwood City. Here are a few images we recently shot of the comforting and delicious menu that ‘looks to Scotland for inspiration but requires the farm-to-table techniques’. I could eat those scotch eggs all day.
The latest from the newly opened Citizen Cake on Fillmore. The chicken and the egg come first on her latest sandwich!
I love the Four Seasons, one of my favorite ‘in-town get-aways’. Pet and people friendly I say. We just finished creating images for Chef Mark Richardson as he unveils his Seasons restaurant’s newly re-concepted American steakhouse menu. The steaks are locally-sourced from California’s top ranches and delish! The sides like Black Truffle, Parmesan & Hazelnut Späetzle, Chef Richardson’s take on traditional mac and cheese are works of art. And if you have friends in town with kids, their children’s amenities we photographed is grand enough to put a smile on any little face. bravo!
It seems like I get asked every few weeks for a recommendation to take in-town guests that want a bit of flavor of the bay. Particularly on the piers and around the wharf. Well here is my new tip for the holiday guests. Fog Harbor Fish House on Pier 39 is set with classic views as well as foods such as local garlic roasted Dungenous crab and a hearty cioppino. All accompanied by a California wine list of recognizable favorites and a toasty fire-place to boot.
I love restaurants. Everything about them: the chefs, bartenders, managers, servers, line cooks—you name it. I’ve held most of these positions at one point in my life, except for chef (but I do play one at home). It is exhilarating and challenging as a photographer to be able to translate into imagery one particular joint’s vibe. All great restaurants and bars have different personalities, quirks and, hopefully, a sensibility that will attract regulars. I have two restaurant books on shelves this fall: I think this one, Chef Michael Chiarello’s BOTTEGA, exemplifies the experience. Bottega is a dynamic yet comfortable place where the staff is excellent, Michael is a rock star master in his Yountville kitchen and a bad ass entertainer on the floor.
