When I met Robbie Lewis some 18 years ago, we were both working in the kitchen at Rubicon during Traci Des Jardins’ pre-Jardiniere days. I was expediting in hopes of learning about California cuisine so I could transition from fashion photography to food. Robbie, who would later go on to helm Jardiniere, Bacar and the stoves at Oracle, was on the other side of the line shoving hot plates my direction, flanked by the likes of Paul Arenstam (Americano, Summer Kitchen + Bake Shop), Richard Reddington (Redd) and of course Traci. To know @Rdlewisjr is to love reading his acerbic and rascally tweets, but to know him well is to see that he is also quite an insightful person and writer. His “Thank You Card” to el Bulli’s Chef Ferran Adrià, published today on SFgate, is a perfect example of his thoughtfulness and passion for his industry.
